In their 2006 article, Secrets, Lies, and Sweatshops, Dexter Roberts and Pete Engardio examine the issue of unfair labor practices that have been discovered in numerous foreign factories contracted to manufacture products for American businesses. According to the article, businesses that have turned to outsourcing are trying to avoid accusations that they exploit sweatshop labor with elaborate codes of conduct and on-site monitoring (529). However, maintaining the fair labor standards they promote as a badge of responsible capitalism can be difficult when many of the foreign companies they work with have developed ways to conceal such abuses (529). A further problem is that just pinning down what would be considered fair wages abroad can be difficult for American companies. For example, while some authorities may put the average manufacturing wage in China at 64 cents an hour, that rate assumes a 40-hour week, when, in fact, 60- to 100-hour weeks are common in China, meaning that the real manufacturing wage is far less (532).

2) Discuss what you think American multinational companies should or can do to resolve the dilemma Roberts and Engardio describe in their article.
