About the paper:
Main focus: how architectural structures are used to dramatize social and psychic tensions and transformations. The English country house inhabited by masters and servants interacting according to strictly regulated, yet historically changing codes, the efficacy of spatial and spatializing arrangements comes to the fore: It is in the complexities unfolding between upstairs and downstairs that many of the constitutive tensions of British society gain aesthetic and narrative shape. All this as the main focus the novel Wide Sargasso Sea making comparisons to Jane Eyre.
