Instruction:

This essay is a literary analysis. Your focus is on creating a thesis – for example, \”Although the wife in \’Cathedral\’ appear to be a minor character to the extent that she doesn\’t even have a name, she is actually the pivotal conflict in the story.\” The thesis has to be your own idea on how an element in the story you choose works; then you back it up by using examples from the text. You are analyzing, interpreting, or \”reading\” the text for meaning.

Uses examples in the form of quotes from the text. How many quotes? I hate to put a number on it because eventually it becomes more intuitive. However, for a start in a short paper as this, you might include 2-4 quotes. Do not fill your paper with quotes, however; you job is to select material from the source (in this case, the story or stories you\’ve selected) to illustrate your analysis – the quotes fit into your paper, not the other way around of having a bunch of quotes, and figuring out what to say between them

Include a Works Cited page. You may only have 1 source, the story you are using from the class (or, if you\’ve done some research – not required! – you may have more than 1). Still, I want you to have practice writing Works Cited pages.
Give your essay an original title – not \”Hamlet,\” or even \”To Be or Not To Be\” (because it\’s cliche); original would be, \”The Confused Son of Denmark\” (or something like that…)
You will need to submit the paper through turnitin; you will find this link right in Canvas, under the day the paper is due. Be attentive to these requirements.
Be attentive to these requirements as you will get points reduced if you omit some.
