source. When developing an essay, the bulk of the paper should be spent relating references from the work to your ideas. You need to identify specific passages from the poems that serve as inspiration for your ideas. Keep in mind that you cannot base your analysis solely on your emotional response to the poem. For this final paper, you should include more than one poem in analysis.

What do contemporary poets have to say about some of the traditional themes of poetry: love, death, loss, or the passing of time? Choose and discuss poems in your discussion of theme. You may want to choose poems that were not assigned, but that fit into your picture. NEW

source. For this final paper, you should include more than one piece in analysis. When developing an essay, the bulk of the paper focus on the theme or themes in the works. What major ideas can be derived from the pieces? What do you believe is the authors\’ purpose in writing the works? In determining the theme, you should be able to substantiate it only as it relates to the other elements in the piece. Consider the point of view and motivation of the characters, the situations and occurrences, historical time, etc. Keep in mind that you cannot base your analysis solely on your emotional response to the piece.

The most important part of these papers is your interpretation based on evidence from the text. These are not research papers, so use secondary sources sparingly.
