Digital Media in Festivals and Events
Assessment Guide April 2017
During the module students engage with a number of different media and organisations representing local and community digital media art. They are expected to engage with these on the levels of event environment, organisation, content and audience. The assessment requires both a critical research-based, and a creative engagement, with the issues and opportunities provided by the syllabus.
There are two strands to the assignment and students will attempt and submit both pieces of work in order to qualify for a pass in the module:
A) Portfolio: Develop and present a creative idea (product/service) which uses digital technology to improve an event, festival or organisation in the arts and cultural sector (this could be in a local, national or international setting).
60% Portfolio/ Business plan
The portfolio will comprise the following:
A case study of an event, festival or organisation in which you aim to improve through your business idea, and or which validates the potential of your idea (please note that the case study should be presented in the appendix).
A business plan (using the business model canvas framework as your report structure)
A write-up of the pitch presentation (power-point slides as an appendix and/or business model canvas map overview).
Portfolio will be 3,500 words
B) Pitch your idea to an investing stakeholder (e.g. funder/commissioner, partner organisation or private investor).
40% Pitch/Presentation
As individuals, students will pitch a creative idea which uses digital technology to improve an event, festival or organisation in the arts and cultural sector (this could be in a local, national or international setting).
Students must demonstrate a thorough contextual knowledge, and a full understanding of the nature of their chosen medium and its role in the community in which it is based.
The pitch will be 20 minutes in length, and should be fully supported by the necessary documentation presented in your business portfolio. There will be some time for questions from the panel.
