3-day dietary and physical activity record (Part B)

Writing the report (due Friday 21.04.2017 by 5.00PM)
Word limit for written report: 1600160 words, EXCLUDING abstract, results,
References & appendix. This means that the word
Count is ONLY for Introduction, Methods and
Discussion sections.
Specifications: 1.5 spacing, size 12 font, Times New Roman.
You will present your written assignment in the format of a scientific paper. The report should be organised into the following sections:
1. Title
2. Abstract
3. Introduction
4. Materials and Methods =
5. Results
6. Discussion
7. References
8. Appendix
Vancouver style of referencing. (20 or more peer review journal articles from 5 years old)
Title: This should reflect the focus of the report for example: Dietary intake and physical
Activity over a 3 day period of a cohort of University of Canberra students
Abstract: This is brief statement (one paragraph, no more than 250 words) that describes the
Research. It should include around 6 sentences, one each for the background, the aim of the
Research, the methods used for collecting the data,
The results, a discussion of the results, and
A conclusion.
It is often difficult to write a precise abstract; you could look at the abstracts in
Reputable scientific journals (e.g. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) for examples.
Introduction: This is a brief background of the research in which the significance of the
Research is clearly defined. It could include why it is important to collect dietary intake and
Physical activity data from populations, and finish stating the aim of the research which was to Assess the dietary intake and physical activity over a 3 day period of a cohort of university Students.
Material and Methods =
(1) 3-day food record data analysis
(2) 3-day physical activity data analysis
(3) Descriptive and Anthropometrics Data analysis
Height (184m)= Stadiometer and (right) head positioning of the Frankfurt plane.
Weight (69kg)= weighting scale
BMI (20/m2) = ???????????????????? (????????) ???????????????????? 2(????2)
Waist circumference (cm) is measured using a measuring tape
Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) combined with triceps skinfold measurement is an indirect determination of the arm muscle area (AMA) and arm fat area (AFA).
Knee height (cm) is measured using a measuring tape and wooden or plastic ruler
Arm span (cm) is measured using a measuring tape whiteboard. Please note that this method is an estimation of individuals height
Triceps skinfold pinch in measurement of fat (left) and types of skinfold callipers (right).
biceps skinfold measuring using calliper
subscapular skinfold measuring calliper
suprailiac skinfold measuring calliper
The purpose of this section is to provide enough information and
Detail to allow somebody to reproduce the research, should they wish to. This includes
Anthropometric assessment that was done in Tutorial 1. Providing a statement of Please refer to tutorial notes (or similar) is not adequate for the purposes of this assignment.
Results: The section includes a summary of the results. The first paragraph should describe the Physical characteristics of the participants, which should include mean weight (SD), height
(SD), body mass index (BMI), gender, etc. In this assignment you do not require to perform in Depth statistical analysis using any of the statistical software (such as SPSS or R); but
Collating data using the values of descriptive statistics such as Mean and Standard Deviation
(SD) is necessary. It is highly advisable to include four tables and one figure as follows:
1. Table 1 Energy and nutrient intake (MeanSD)
2. Table 2 Mean (SD) daily intake of selected nutrients including a comparison with
NRVs 6
3. Mean (SD) AMDRs for all, male and female participants, including a comparison with
Population benchmarks
4. Table 4: Mean (SD) Energy Balance (for all, male and female participants)
5. Figure 1. Relationship between BMI and total energy intake for all participants
Discussion:
The discussion involves the interpretation of the results. This section should
Provide enough information/discussion on the class results related to the following areas:
The adequacy of the population mean daily intake of energy and macronutrients when
Compared with population benchmarks (using AMDR)? Limitations of the study and method design: Is it possible that there may have been any under-reporting or over-reporting of?
Dietary and physical activity data? Is this common in research studies and why is it important? Was three days long enough to obtain a reasonable picture of student populations
Dietary intake and/or physical activity? Discuss the importance of this.
What were the limitations associated with the using dietary reference standards in this
Context? What are the limitations for using equations for estimating energy expenditure and
Body mass index? In general, what are the limitations of the methods that are commonly used to? Measure dietary intake, for example are they objective or subjective? Also, what are the
Limitations of using food composition tables?
References, both in-text and in the reference list which you will insert after
The Discussion, should be presented in the Vancouver style.
Remember to REFERENCE!!!
Appendix: Include the raw data sheets (Your OWN Dietary intake and physical activity data)
And calculations for your dietary and physical activity record these can be a scan of your
Handwritten tables.
